Helpful Tips On When to Replace Makeup Brushes

HAPPY WEEKEND READERS,

What better way to start your weekend and pre spring cleaning then with your makeup bag(s) and/or drawer(s)?

We all know that you should replace makeup when it smells off or stops working, (3 months for mascara, 2 years for powders, etc. see my blog about that @ http://aguidetowhatsinsideyourbeautybag.blogspot.com/2013/03/pre-spring-cleaning-alert.html but did you know your beauty tools have a shelf life too?  Read on for 5 common beauty tools you might have in your bathroom and how often you should replace them.
  1. Makeup Brushes
Quality makeup brushes will last a long time with proper care and regular cleanings, but should be replaced if they’re broken or not working correctly.  Replace your brushes if you notice excess shedding, a change in shape, broken ferrule, or are unable to get them clean after years of use.
  2. Loofah
When was the last time you replaced your loofah? If you can’t remember then it’s probably time for a new one.  In the warm, wet atmosphere that is your bathroom, organisms like mold and bacteria can grow quickly and spread to your skin if your sponge isn’t changed regularly.  Dermatologists recommend you replace your loofah every 3-4 weeks as bacteria can grow in its crevices and it will lose its exfoliating properties.
  3. Pure Complexion Sponge (Konjac)
This new Asian beauty import is perfect for cleansing your face, but much like your loofah needs to be changed out regularly.  Replace this facial sponge once a month to keep your face happy and healthy.  Dirty facial sponges can encourage blemishes to pop up more frequently.
  4. EcoPouf
These mesh bath sponges are great for lathering up and are more resistant to bacteria than the loofah since they dry faster.  They can still harbor bacteria though, and should be replaced every two months.  If you want to keep your pouf extra clean, you can disinfect it with anti-bacterial soap every few days, and make sure you hang it to dry in-between uses.
  5. Hair Brushes
Like makeup brushes, a good hair brush can last a long time.  You’ll need a replacement though if too many rubber tips go missing or bristles start falling out.  To keep your brush looking great, make sure to pull out excess hair when you’re done styling.
